  • The first ever franking machine was invented by Edward Franks (Engle Frankmussler).
  • The word “Franking” comes from the Latin word for “Francus”, which translates as free.
  • Some franking impressions require Two different ink cartridges. One for the top half and one for the bottom half of the frank.
  • As late as the 1990’s, when you needed to top up your franking machines postage, you had to take the entire machine to your local Post Office.
  • A franking machine was originally operated by hand, until technology advanced so that electronic machines could be used.
