Top tips for saving time and money when franking your mail

First things first, organise your mail

Start by separating your mail by size and service. For example, sort into first and second class and then by the size of the envelope or package. Don’t forget to use separate trays for UK and international mail to avoid franking mail incorrectly and save time.

Utilise Royal Mail bags & pouches

Royal Mail provide free bags for parcels and pouches for letters to keep all your post together. Pouches can carry up to 200 regular letters or 45 large letters and the Royal Mail bags can hold a maximum weight of 11kg.

Use your franking machine to advertise

Franking machines allow you to print your company logo and return address directly onto every piece of mail you send out. Make sure to make use of this as a free marketing outlet!

Fold letters where possible

Under Royal Mail’s Pricing in Proportion (PIP) scheme, businesses can save money with their franked mail costs by folding the letter and putting it into a smaller envelope. Just be mindful when folding that this doesn’t push your letter into the large letter category.

Train temporary staff

Make sure any temporary staff understand the correct sizes for a letter, large letter and parcel. Tip: print out the sizes and put them next to your franking machine so they are always there if needed.
